We Would Like To Create A Steering Group To Help Decide What PLC Offers to Disabled People.

January 7, 2021 2 Comments

Do you consider yourself disabled? Or are a parent or carer to someone with a disability? We would love to hear from you about what you would like to see at Penistone Leisure Centre!

A lot of the alterations we have made at Penistone Leisure Centre have made the space more accessible- we now have wide corridors, access ramps, a changing places toilet with shower/hoist/changing table, high contrast doorways and serving counters which are suitable for wheelchairs.

We are in the process of applying for funding to complete the corridor that will link the two gyms. This will allow for level access to the Gym and to the larger part of the hall, without the need to go outside when the main hall is in use. We need to know what else you would like to see at Penistone Leisure Centre, so that we can apply for any other funding necessary?

Would you like to see specially trained gym instructors to help you to train in the gym? Gym Sessions just for people with disabilities? Specific activities like Wheelchair Sports, Boccia, Adapted Table Tennis, Skating etc?

If you have opinions on what you would like to see here, we’d love to hear from you! Please share this with anyone who you think may benefit from better access to sports too.

Obviously, due to lockdown we aren’t going to be able to meet up to discuss things for a while, but we can certainly get the plans in place ready for when we can reopen!

Please message [email protected] for an informal chat!

Hi it would be great if the Leisure Centre could run chair exercise classes as this would not only benefit people with disabilities, but the senior citizens s in the area. As we grow older, it can become more challenging to take part in regular physical activity, especially for senior citizens with compromised mobility. Seated exercise classes would provide them with another option that helps increase their daily activity and improve their health.

      Hi Jane,
Thanks very much for your feedback! The great news is- We actually have an instructor lined up and ready to start offering seated exercise classes once we are allowed to re-open! So we hope to have them underway once we can do so safely, along with other sessions for older people- such as ‘Silver Circuit’ and ‘PenActive’ too. We had hoped to get the sessions up and running between lockdowns, however with older people being the most vulnerable to Covid, it was decided to wait until the vaccination programme was well underway in order to limit risk.
Really glad to hear that you agree with us (and Age UK who we have been in consultation with) that there is a need for these sessions in the Penistone area.
      Very best wishes,
      Fran
