A time to celebrate all of our wonderful volunteers! As you know, Penistone Leisure Centre is run almost entirely by volunteers. Without whom, the leisure centre would no longer exist. We think our volunteers are pretty wonderful!

The centre was closed down in 2011 due to council cutbacks. A group of dedicated local people got together and began the task of taking over the centre and obtaining all the correct insurances/licences/contracts etc. The centre reopened for classes on Saturday 22nd September 2012, and the Gym re-opened on Monday 9th September 2013.
Since then a lot has changed! We’re now in the middle of a massive refurbishment project which will see the centre move from being a run down building that didn’t quite suit it’s purpose to a much more efficient space with access for everyone to the facilities.
The Centre has got to this stage mostly due to the hard work of local people who give their time and sometimes their money to better this place, and keep it open for the community.
The Covid-Crisis in which we find ourselves has highlighted the power of volunteering. Millions of people across the UK have given their time to look out for their neighbours and members of their community. Many of the Leisure Centre’s own volunteers have become volunteers for ‘Love Thy Penistone‘ and countless hours have been spent shopping and collecting prescriptions and generally being a friendly face/listening ear. After this difficult time, we need to take the positives that have come from it, and take them forwards…
As things slowly re-open and life goes back to normal, we are looking forwards to seeing our loyal volunteers, and would also love to welcome new volunteers to the team as we’ll be open for longer hours! Have you got skills to share?
We need a wide variety of people to steer the centre for the community! We need people to join our committee of trustees to lead the centre- particularly anyone with a strong financial background, as our current treasurer is stepping down (but staying on as a trustee).
We need many hands to make light work of the decorating/DIY needed to make the refurbished areas of the centre beautiful spaces to be in. Could you spare a few hours a week?
We need regular weekly volunteers to open the centre for sessions (once we are able to open again). Could you (wo)man reception, welcoming centre users and taking payments for gym memberships?
We’d love to hear from you.
