Volunteering

Massive Thank You to Our Maintenance Volunteers!

March 31, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

We had a volunteer day on Sunday last weekend to get the centre ready for partial reopening for some things from the 12th April. We had a fantastic turnout and achieved a lot of ‘finishing off jobs’ (working on our own little areas in order to maintain social distancing of course…)

One of our volunteers took it a step further… Check out Liz looking glam in her super safe haz-mat suit! Just kidding- she was using a resin paint to seal the Studio/Cafe’s floor!

We also have regular maintenance volunteers who do jobs weekly to upkeep and maintain the centre and grounds. We are so grateful to these brilliant people who give their time to help us make the Leisure Centre a lovely place to be!

If you’d like to join the team, and are handy with a paintbrush or more, we’ll be holding another volunteer day on Sunday 11th April to finish some more jobs off before reopening! Please email [email protected] for more info.

Making A Short Film With Penistone FM

February 11, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

This week we’ve spent some time with the guys from Penistone FM making a short film about the updates to our updated facilities!

Our brilliant volunteer Mick presented the short film for us! When you sign up to volunteer at Penistone Leisure Centre, we like to get to know you and find out about your special interests and skills. Mick is a talented actress and comfortable on camera so was the ideal volunteer to ask to be the face of this project!

It was really nice to spend some time talking about the project and realise what a long way we have come since the early days of the Leisure Centre. We hope the short video will let you come and see us, whilst you can’t come and see us!

Big thank you to Mick for sharing her skills with us, the team at Penistone FM for their expertise and Penistone Ward Alliance who have funded the film and supported the project from the start.

Keep your eyes peeled for the finished film soon!

Many Hands Make Light Work!

We still have work to finish in the new cafe room and the meeting room to get the centre back into full use. Lots of cleaning and painting will be required before the spaces can be used and we need them ready to go for October!

Can you come along and help this weekend? We’ll be working at the centre on Saturday from 10-1 & 2-4pm and Sunday 10-2pm. If you can spare a few hours at any point between those times we’d really appreciate it!

We will be working in teams of 6 people (maximum) per room, and not mixing the groups, and asking volunteers to wear masks and maintain social distancing whilst inside the centre.

If you can come along to help, please let us know you are coming beforehand so that we can organise spacing people out and what jobs you’ll be doing by emailing [email protected] (please let us know your preference of jobs if you have one- painting/cleaning/shifting things etc) or texting 07545 978793.

Increased Hours At The Gym!

August 23, 2020 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

We are increasing the Gym’s opening hours from w/c 24th August, as follows-

  • Mondays 10am-12noon & 6-8pm
  • Tuesdays 6-8pm
  • Wednesdays 10am-12noon and 6-8pm
  • Thursdays 6-8pm
  • Fridays 10am-12noon and 6-8pm

We hope to continue to increase the opening hours of the gym as we get acclimatised to the new ‘normal’. We are also working on a way to be able to sell weekly/monthly passes for the gym too, so please bear with us.

You can book your slot below. Please note that all gym places must be booked in advance (strictly no walk-ins on the day) as this is to ensure we don’t go over our limit of 6 gym users in the gym at a time.

The opening of the gym for increased hours relies on a dedicated team of volunteers who give their time to provide this asset to the community! Could you contribute?

In return for a 2 hour volunteering slot per week, you would be able to claim a week’s free gym pass too! Or if you are a qualified gym instructor who is willing to volunteer your time to help perform inductions etc, you can have 24/7 access to the gym for your own training. Win, win!

A Plea for Help!

June 15, 2020 by Rachel Gibbons 2 Comments

Want to do something brilliant this weekend, to help your community?

We desperately need to get the Centre ready, so that we are able to re-open as soon as the government say it’s safe for us to do so, and so that the NHS can run their Cardiac Rehabilitation sessions from the centre.

There have been hold-ups in the refurbishment due to supply chain issues, and obviously reduced staffing levels on site, which of course couldn’t be helped, but it has left us with no time, and ALOT to do. Now, we are up against it, and really need to make some serious progress next weekend!

We need LOADS of volunteers to come down and help us to start to put the centre back together (think ‘Challenge Anneka!’) Can you spare a few hours on Friday 19th evening- 6-8pm to help us clean and move things around? Or give any time to help us Paint areas of the centre on Saturday 20th or Sunday 21st between 10-4pm?

Obviously, we will be maintaining social distancing at all times, and providing all the necessary equipment etc.

And excellent cake/tea/coffee of course…

Can you help?

Please let us know if you’re coming and when, so we can make sure there aren’t too many people in any one area at a time, by emailing [email protected]

PLEASE SHARE, or TAG friends who may help too!

Here’s a photo of some of our brilliant volunteers Joe and Tara from the last work day!
