First aid and defibrillator training

We try to make sure we always have a first aider on duty when Penistone Leisure Centre is open, and so run regular ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’ courses to train new volunteers. These are also available to anyone else in the area at a cost of £40.

As we have a defibrillator on site which is publicly available, and there are others in Penistone Town Centre and around the area, the course includes defibrillator training. This will show you how to restart someone’s heart in an emergency.  ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’ is a recognised qualification which leads to a certificate and can be used for work, volunteering or so you could help friends and family in an emergency.

The course has been booked for Sunday 9th July from 9:30am-4pm. As before, this will be available free for Penistone Leisure Centre volunteers and will cost £40 for any other local people who wish to attend. It will include free lunch and drinks for everyone. We welcome new volunteers, who could then attend the first aid course for free!

Covered in the day is resuscitation (including the defibrillator), recovery position, choking, bleeding, burns and shock.

Clearance Day – for your diary

You might have noticed that we have a fair amount of clutter round the centre – in fact we have had comments on this in our suggestion box. So we have decided to have a clearance weekend on 15th/16th July where we will get a skip and also find new homes for a lot of the things we don’t need any more. We’ll also do a clean up and there will be plenty of odd jobs to do. All the details will follow, but we would appreciate as much help as we can, to get the centre tidied up. Thanks everyone!

Ceramics class – garden bird cane toppers

Sarah Jones-Morris is back at Penistone Leisure Centre with two more ceramics classes this coming week. On Monday 5th June 6:30-9pm and Thursday 8th June 10am-12:30pm

Come and spend an evening with Sarah Jones-Morris Ceramics learning how to make ceramic garden cane toppers which will then be fired and glazed so that you can display them in your gardens.

Using a variety of handbuilding techniques Sarah will work with you through the steps to make a set of three cane toppers. These can easily be adapted to create a variety of different forms, you will be making birds and poppy seed heads, but if you have a particular theme that you wish to work to then please bring your ideas along.

Using different materials and mark makers the finished pieces will be patterened. Sarah will then talk through different glaze options with you.

Your finished cane toppers will be taken away, fired and glazed and returned to you ready to display in the sunshine of your summer gardens!

Penistone Boundary Walk

Penistone Boundary Walk is an annual event organised by the Ladies Circle and this year they are raising money for us and the Trans Pennine Trail volunteers. The event is happening this Sunday – 21st May – and starts at Cubley Hall at 9am.

It’s a sponsored 16 or 8 mile walk around the beautiful countryside of Penistone starting from Cubley Hall. The walk is well marked and the paths well trodden so why not join them for a day out on Sunday to complete this challenge? There’s a light refreshments stop along the route and a free drink at Cubley Hall upon completion.

We are hoping to be able to buy some new badminton nets and other sports equipment with money raised, so please go along and support them!

The Mad Hatter’s Skating Fairtrade Tea Party

If you enjoyed our Halloween and Christmas parties, you’ll be pleased to hear we have an extra party this year – The Mad Hatter’s Skating Fairtrade Tea Party! This will have all your favourite skating games with a Fairtrade twist, the chance to dress up as an Alice in Wonderland character (optional) and an afternoon tea with lots of Fairtrade food. This time we are selling skater’s tickets for £6 including food, or afternoon tea only at £4. You can still spectate for free if you don’t want to join in the afternoon tea, but with a delicious feast of sandwiches, scones, Fairtrade jam and cream, Fairtrade chocolate cakes and biscuits and Fairtrade juice, tea and coffee – can you resist it? You can go to the café for your afternoon tea at any time during the party with your friends or family.

The Mad Hatter’s Skating Fairtrade Tea Party will be from 3:30-5:30pm on Sunday 12th February. Booking is essential, as we need to know how many people we are catering for and there is a safety limit. The Christmas and Halloween parties both sold out, so get your tickets early by texting Kirsty on 07341 300259.

We are having this party as part of Fairtrade fortnight (although a little early) and have been asked to run it by ‘Fairtrade in Penistone’. There will be people from the group at the party to answer any questions you might have about Fairtrade. They will also be showing a short, fun, Fairtrade film while you are eating.

Huge thanks goes to Longley Farm for donating cream, cream cheese and butter…and massive thanks to Pete at Bank View Café (The Spotty Café) for providing sandwiches, cakes and scones at cost price to support Penistone Leisure Centre and Fairtrade in Penistone.
