You Can Still Support Penistone Leisure Centre, Even While We’re Closed!

January 12, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

Don’t forget that we have been lucky to be selected as one of our local Co-op’s Community Causes! This means that the Co-op will donate a proportion of their Community Cause Fund to us every time you shop with the Co-op and show your Members Card.

In order to help us, you’ll need to log in to your Co-op members page and select us as your chosen cause. The more people who choose us as their community cause, the larger proportion of the fund we recieve.

We plan to use this money to upgrade some of the tired equipment in the gym. SO, if you believe in access to quality sports equipment for the community at affordable prices, then please choose us!

Don’t Forget That Love Thy Penistone Is There For You if You Need Us!

If you are vulnerable, shielding or isolating, please don’t forget that you can access help from community volunteers via Love Thy Penistone.

Love Thy Penistone was set up in the first lockdown to allow our community to support each other at this difficult time! We still have plenty of volunteers lined up to assist if they are needed. Some of our volunteers from the Leisure Centre were involved in the set up of this project, and many more have volunteered their

So if you need some shopping, or a prescription fetching, or pairing up with someone friendly for a chat, then please do get in touch to ask for help via the website or on 01226 337400.

Or alternatively, if you would like to volunteer to help someone in our community, then please sign up here.

It’s Volunteers’ Week!

A time to celebrate all of our wonderful volunteers! As you know, Penistone Leisure Centre is run almost entirely by volunteers. Without whom, the leisure centre would no longer exist. We think our volunteers are pretty wonderful!

The centre was closed down in 2011 due to council cutbacks. A group of dedicated local people got together and began the task of taking over the centre and obtaining all the correct insurances/licences/contracts etc. The centre reopened for classes on Saturday 22nd September 2012, and the Gym re-opened on Monday 9th September 2013.

Since then a lot has changed! We’re now in the middle of a massive refurbishment project which will see the centre move from being a run down building that didn’t quite suit it’s purpose to a much more efficient space with access for everyone to the facilities.

The Centre has got to this stage mostly due to the hard work of local people who give their time and sometimes their money to better this place, and keep it open for the community.

The Covid-Crisis in which we find ourselves has highlighted the power of volunteering. Millions of people across the UK have given their time to look out for their neighbours and members of their community. Many of the Leisure Centre’s own volunteers have become volunteers for ‘Love Thy Penistone‘ and countless hours have been spent shopping and collecting prescriptions and generally being a friendly face/listening ear. After this difficult time, we need to take the positives that have come from it, and take them forwards…

As things slowly re-open and life goes back to normal, we are looking forwards to seeing our loyal volunteers, and would also love to welcome new volunteers to the team as we’ll be open for longer hours! Have you got skills to share?

We need a wide variety of people to steer the centre for the community! We need people to join our committee of trustees to lead the centre- particularly anyone with a strong financial background, as our current treasurer is stepping down (but staying on as a trustee).

We need many hands to make light work of the decorating/DIY needed to make the refurbished areas of the centre beautiful spaces to be in. Could you spare a few hours a week?

We need regular weekly volunteers to open the centre for sessions (once we are able to open again). Could you (wo)man reception, welcoming centre users and taking payments for gym memberships?

We’d love to hear from you.

Please email [email protected] for more information about the different volunteer roles available.

What Can You Do for Your Community?

January 24, 2020 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

One of the wonderful things about living in Penistone and surrounding areas is the fantastic sense of community we have here.

We are so aware of that here at Penistone Leisure Centre- because without our community, we wouldn’t still be here providing access to sports facilities for everyone!

We’ve asked for help on numerous occasions before, sometimes with financial support in a crisis (like the roof, and dry rot in the hall floor!) and sometimes with physical support with things like maintenance, painting/decorating etc, and we’ve always been bowled over by the support that’s been forthcoming.

Now we need to ask again! The refurbishment project is a huge undertaking and we’re going to need lots of hands to make light work of it! Would you consider signing up to our ‘Friends of Penistone Leisure Centre’ Scheme?

The Friends of Penistone Leisure Centre Scheme is just a way of pledging your support for what we’re doing here at the centre. There are loads of ways you can help us, from as little as sharing our social media posts, to as much as becoming a trustee for the centre (we’re on the lookout for a new treasurer if anyone fiscally minded wants to help!). The scheme means we’ll have a database of people we can call upon when we need help to keep your community Leisure Centre on track, because we are after all ‘Led by the Community, For the Community!’
