Summer Holiday Activities

22/06/2017 by Rachel Gibbons Leave a Comment

We’ve got the Summer sorted…

Summer Skating

Skating times for the Summer Holiday will be:

  • Saturday 12-2pm – Families
  • Sunday 10am-12 – Everyone
  • NOT Mondays
  • Tuesday 2-4pm – Everyone
  • Wednesday 2-4pm – Everyone
  • Thursday 2-4pm – Families
  • Friday 2-4pm – Everyone
  • Friday 8-10pm – for year 7-10 – not every week*

*Friday night is a skate disco for young people who will be in years 7-10 when they go back to school in September. It is running on 4th, 11th, 18th August and 1st September onwards.

Family sessions are aimed at younger or slower children with their parents / guardians and the beginner mats will be out. Sessions for everyone means there could be people of any age and ability – the beginner mats can still be requested and might be out anyway.

A huge thanks to all the volunteers who will be signing people in, handing out skates and running the tuck shop over the summer, meaning that we can run this many sessions. There are still some spare volunteer slots to fill – most have 2 people now, but it is easier for all the volunteers if there are 3 people in each session. If you could help, please look at our Summer Rota page.

Summer Holiday Activities

Quidditch

You’ve played football, cricket, tennis, hockey… but have you played Quidditch? Played with a team of 7 – a keeper, 3 chasers, 2 beaters and a seeker, 3 hoops at each end for goals and on broomsticks. This is of course the Muggle version of Quidditch as it’s hard to get the brooms to fly – but this sport has official rules, an international association and a World Cup. It is based very strongly on the game from Harry Potter – feel free to bring your own cloak for the match!

Quidditch will be played on Thursdays from 11am-12 on 27th July, 10th and 24th August. It costs £4 and is for children aged 6-10 yrs. Please book by texting Louise on 07526 253100 or emailing her on info@penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk.

Dodgeball and Benchball

This is a new session, run by Kelly (who does Clubbercise) and is something different for 11-15 year olds this summer. There will be fun and games, lots of competition and the chance to develop new skills and make new friends. Dodgeball and Benchball will be played every Friday 10-11am and cost £4 each or £20 for all 6 weeks. Please book by contacting Kelly on 07708 931231.

Balanceability

Is your child struggling to get going on a bike? This is a new way of learning to ride, focussing on balance and stability by learning without stabilisers – but also without pedals. It’s lots of fun, with different activities and challenges while children learn the skills they need. The session is run by Balanceability instructor Lee and costs £3. Balanceability is on Saturday 5th August, times to be confirmed. To book, please contact Pete on 07397 288043 or bikelibrary@penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk.

You can bring along your child’s bike, which Pete can remove the pedals from. Or you can borrow one from our Bike Library for the session, which you can then loan to practice at home. Either way, we will give you the pedals and show you how to put them back on again once your child is ready.

Bike Maintenance

Pete, who is running our new Bike Library, is doing two bike maintenance courses over the summer, to help you get your bike in shape ready for those long rides in the sunshine. You can bring your own bike, or borrow one of ours and take it away with you on loan afterwards. The course will cover adjusting gears and brakes, mending punctures and doing a safety check, all of which will help to keep you and your bike on the road.

The Bike Maintenance course runs on

  • Saturday 5th August 2:15-3:15pm
  • Saturday 5th August 3:15-4:15pm
  • Saturday 19th August 10-11am
  • Saturday 19th August 11am-12

It costs £5 and can be booked by contacting Pete on 07397 288043 or bikelibrary@penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk.

Art Explosion

Art Explosion is back to bring out your creativity this summer. This time, there is an African theme, where you will be making masks, jewellery and crafts. Art Explosion is on Wednesday 23rd August 9:30am-1:30pm. It costs £10 and is for children aged 6-10. Please bring a packed lunch which will be eaten together in the class. To see classes we have run before, see the Art Explosion page. Call or text Ruth on 07970 109161 to book.

Boogie Bounce Kids

Kids love to bounce! Let them come along and burn some of that excess energy off, bouncing and having fun, exercise to the latest songs. The disco lights will be on for a party feel! Boogie Bounce Kids is every Thursday 4:30-5pm except 27th July and 3rd August. It’s on in term time as well!

Boogie Bounce Kids is suitable for age 6 years and above and costs £4. Please phone Claire on 07974 178953 for enquiries or to book.

Skating Skills

Skating skills will teach you new tricks so you can enjoy your skating even more. Do you have trouble stopping? Or would you like to learn to jump, skate backwards or weave through cones? Skating skills will be on Wednesdays from 11:30am-1:30pm on 2nd, 16th and 30th August and costs £7 or £18 for all three. Please bring a packed lunch to eat together. You can book by calling Rachel on 0794 7991727. For more information see our Skating Lessons page.

Squats with Tots

…and finally something for you this Summer Holiday! This is a circuits-type exercise class which you can bring your children to. In term time, only pre-schoolers come along. But on 8th and 15th August, any age children are welcome. Younger ones can run around and play. Older children are welcome to join in – Vicky will find exercises at the right level for them.
