So you think getting in shape with a toddler under you feet is impossible.
Now with the Squats with Tots team Becca and Vicky here at Penistone Leisure Centre you can do it.
After a summer break, the fun and friendly class is back with Becca Rushforth leading the exercises and Vicky Fletcher, as always with some fun creative activities planned for the youngsters.
While you get in shape, your youngsters can play with the toys in the centre of the group where you can keep an eye on them without having to curb your workout.
Becca has four boys, Fin, aged 2, Rhys, 5, Zack 7 and nine-year-old Tod – so she knows what it’s like to have youngsters around when you’re trying to find a minute for some exercise. There are lots of toys to keep your youngsters interest and even balance bikes and scooters that the slightly older children can enjoy around the sports hall in which the session runs.
“I can’t believe I didn’t do this before. But one day it just struck me that what we needed was a workout that the kids could come to,” said Becca.
She starts the workouts with circuits and moves on to 20 minutes of interval training. At the end she always has some innovative way to get parents to involve their children in their abs workout.
“We did Row, Row, Row Your Boat last week,” she laughs.
Thirty-three-year-old freelance fitness instructor Becca, from Dodworth, has always been keen on sport and keeping fit. When she was younger she got her kicks playing football for Barnsley and Yorkshire, and had trials for England.
But she doesn’t expect you all to workout like a national football squad.
“You do it at your own pace and own level. I always give different options so there’s something for everyone at any level,” said Becca.
During term time the group is usually mums (though dads are welcome) and toddlers, however older children do come along during the holidays.
There are 45 minutes of exercise and then a 15-minute craft session for the children and a cup of tea.
Vicky is a design technology teacher so leading the creative section comes naturally to her. The 29-year-old, also from Dodworth, is Becca’s sister-in-law and she’s also a mum so it’s a real family feel at the workout.
Sessions run every Tuesday morning from 10am-11am, but Becca is hoping to set up a second session if there is enough interest.
