An Update on Our Appeal For Computers For Schools

February 4, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

Just a quick note to say a huge “THANK YOU!” to everyone who has donated laptops/computers/tablets following our appeal in conjunction with ‘Love Thy Penistone‘!

So far, we have managed to provide St Johns with all the computers they needed, Oxspring have had some, but will take any more that we can arrange, and we’re speaking to Hoylandswaine about what they need.

We’ve had a brilliant response to our appeal, but we have a shortage of monitors for the desktop PCs we have had donated, so if anyone has a spare monitor knocking around, we would appreciate it. And we are still accepting donations of laptops/tablets too.

You can donate by dropping any equipment you have spare to Penistone Leisure Centre on the following days-

  • Monday 8am-4pm
  • Wednesday 8am-4pm
  • Thursday 12:30-4:30pm
  • Fridays 10am-12pm

We also need to say a big thank you to Penistone Round Table and their resident tech wizard, Ian Brisland, who has wiped all the data from the computers and upgraded them where necessary. If you ever need someone to look at your computer, Ian comes highly recommended! You can contact him via his facebook here- https://www.facebook.com/brizza1982

We Are Part Of The ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ Scheme

February 3, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

We are pleased to say that we have joined the ‘Breast Feeding Welcome Here’ scheme for Barnsley.

What this means, is that we have a policy in place for breastfeeding and that we will train volunteers to be supportive of families who choose to breastfeed. If you would like a quiet or private place to feed your baby whilst at Penistone Leisure Centre, please speak to one of our volunteers who will be happy to help wherever possible.

Following our recent renovations, we would like to start and welcome more children’s groups to the centre, and hope that signing up to this scheme will help parents to feel confident to come here and know they are welcome.

We are pleased to have a Little Leopards Baby Massage joining us here at the centre as soon as restrictions allow and hope to add more sessions for families to our timetable soon. Here’s course leader Amy and her little girl along with our ‘Breast Feeding Welcome Here’ stickers which you’ll now see at the Centre.

Some Great News!

January 23, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

We were very pleased to hear on Friday, that our funding application to Penistone Ward Alliance was successful! We now have the money we need to complete the exterior corridor which we need to build between the Cardio room and the main gym room. This wooden structure will mean that there is safe and secure, level access to the Gym or far end of the hall (if the near end is in use).

It will be a huge improvement, as at the moment we have been having to ask disabled centre users to enter via a different door to everyone else causing an unintentional discrimination. Also centre users have had to walk around the car park in the dark to access the toilets in the main part of the centre, which is unpleasant in bad weather conditions!

The corridor will also safeguard the gym from thefts, as all people entering the gym will have to access via the front doors, so will be on our CCTV.

Here’s a rough mock up of what the finished corridor will look like!

We owe a huge thank you to BMBC who the funding comes from, and to the Ward Alliance Panel who meet to decide who gets it, and of course to the staff at Penistone Area Team who have been very supportive of what we’re trying to achieve here.

Feeling Isolated? Join Our Walking Buddies Scheme!

January 21, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

We know that there are a lot of people out there who are feeling very isolated by the lockdown at the moment, and have been thinking about what we can do to help! The lack of social contact is getting to us all, but it must be particularly tough for those who live alone, or are far from their families.

Current lockdown rules mean that you are allowed to meet one other person within your local area for some exercise. We know that there are a lot of people who are in the same boat, who might just benefit from some fresh air, a chat and some exercise.

So, if you would be interested in being paired up with someone else locally to meet for a walk and a chat, then add your details to the form below. We’ll then contact you when there is a suitable match and give you each others details to arrange a walk.

This service of connecting people is being provided by us at here at Penistone Leisure Centre, but we aren’t able to offer a walk leader or anything more due to current restrictions, so it should be noted that you are responsible for your own safety whilst meeting your walk buddy. Social distancing MUST be maintained at all times, and you should not attend arranged walks if you are displaying any of the symptoms of Covid-19.

It’s also advisable to agree a route/time before you go to meet up and tell someone else your planned route. Always carry a mobile phone, and wear warm and suitable clothing.

To join the scheme, please add your details to the form below and we’ll be in touch!

Walking Buddies Scheme

  • I understand that my details will be passed to another local person for the purpose of arranging a socially distanced walk together as per the scheme mentioned above, and that I will also receive their details too.
I understand that when I meet up with my walking buddy, I am responsible for my own safety and that it is my own responsibility to adhere to Covid guidelines at all times.
I understand that I can ask for my details to be removed from the database at any point by emailing [email protected]

Do You Have Computer Equipment to Donate to Local Schools?

January 20, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

If you have any old computer equipment- laptops/tablets etc to donate to local schools, then you can drop it off to us at Penistone Leisure Centre on Thursday between 12-4:30pm or Friday between 10am-12noon.

As part of Love Thy Penistone we’re happy to act as a collection point for equipment and will take it to local schools to be used by students who are working from home and may not have access to the equipment that they need to learn effectively.

So far we have heard back from Penistone Grammar School and St Johns Juniors to say that they are interested in receiving computer donations. If you are aware of any other local schools that would like to receive donations, please let us know and we’ll distribute what we have had donated equally between them.

We have someone available to wipe the computers clean too, so you don’t need to worry if you aren’t able to reset them!
