Hands Up If You Love Board Games?!

March 2, 2021 by Frances Greenwood 3 Comments

We’re hoping to start a board games Café when restrictions allow and we’d love to hear from you about what games you would like to see here at PLC!

Not sure what a Board Game Café is?! It’s a social place to come together and play! Board Games are a fantastic leveller, they bring people together and they are a fun way to spend time with others. Basically, we’ll have a large number of board games available to play and a friendly environment with drinks and snacks available to order. Come with your family, come with your friends, come alone- there will be a friendly welcome!

There will be a small charge to play which covers the costs of new games, and will allow us to keep a fresh range of games available! If there’s a game you particularly enjoy, you may even be able to rent it to take home, subject to availability!

We’re going to need Games Gurus to help us plan and run a brilliant Board Games Café! Are board games your thing? We will need volunteer Game Gurus to help people choose games to play and help them get started playing! We’d love to hear from you if you’d like to get involved!

Also, we are happy to accept donations of complete, good quality board games if anyone is having a lockdown clear-out! Board games can be dropped off during out opening times.

Now The Weather’s Improving, Why Not Try Our Walking Buddies Scheme?

February 27, 2021 by Frances Greenwood 1 Comment

Our Walking Buddies Scheme has been set up to introduce people to others who would like some company on their daily exercise! Lockdown has left a lot of people feeling isolated, so if you’re interested in meeting other people to go and get some fresh air with, why not join up to the scheme.

Just fill in your details on our form here and give us your preferences on the type of walks you like, and the distances and we’ll match you up with another local person who has similar goals. We live in such a beautiful place, and there’s a lot of positives to be taken from seeing the signs of spring which are everywhere now! Thank you to Helen Hayton for the beautiful photograph.

Obviously lockdown rules still apply, so you should only meet outdoors, and social distancing should apply at all times. You should re-arrange your walk if you have any symptoms of Covid-19 or have been advised to isolate by any medical professional. It’s important to make sure you keep yourself safe, as we are not able to provide walk leaders or anything at this time due to restrictions. It’s important to wear suitable clothing for the weather and take along a snack and a drink to keep your energy up. It’s a good idea to tell someone else who you are meeting and where, and avoid walking in remote places too.

We Have Been Reported to BMBC.

A concerned member of the public has contacted Barnsley Council to say that we are open during lockdown and that they have seen lots of people coming and going at the centre. We would just like to reassure everyone that we are only open for allowable activities. The Centre is open for NHS Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Disability Sports, both of which have been exempted from lockdown restrictions as they provide an essential service for health. These activities have been subject to risk assessments and everything is in place to make them as safe as possible.

So, if you see people entering the Leisure Centre wearing sports clothing, it is because they are attending allowable activities. We have taken Corona Virus restrictions very seriously since the beginning of 2020, and have done everything we can to ensure that we keep the people attending the centre as safe as we possibly can.

We are still CLOSED for Classes, Gym and Skating until further notice.

Apologies for the random post in last week’s newsletter…

We’re just testing out different layouts as part of the development of the new and improved website and it accidentally got included. So don’t worry, we don’t have a ‘People Engineer’ joining the team. It’s just the weird and wonderful imaginings of the people who make placeholder text for these things. Hopefully you’ll like the new layout of the site when it’s all up and running – if you look in the meantime, you’ll see it’s still a work in progress!

Work Has Begun On Our New Link Corridor!

February 11, 2021 by Frances Greenwood Leave a Comment

Being honest, the ‘ground-hog day’ effect of lockdown has been getting to us a bit this week… We miss normal, we miss the buzz of a busy Leisure Centre and we miss being able to get on with all the things we have planned! We know this is temporary, and is definitely what’s needed to keep everyone safe at the moment, but it does drag, right?!

So this week, we were so pleased, to see our builders break ground on our new link corridor! This signifies progress, and means that when we are finally allowed to re-open, we should have safe, level access to the entire building!

One of the aims of the refurbishment was to make the building accessible to everyone in our community, and this link corridor is one of the last things we need to do, to make the internal layout of the work!

Massive ‘Thank you!’ to Penistone Ward Alliance, and Penistone Area Team for donating the required funding to build the corridor, and to our fantastic builders JSD construction for their hard work!
