Frequently Asked Questions
“Do I need a gym membership to use the gym?”
You do need to sign up for a gym membership to use our gym. You can sign up to join the gym here – it’s £3 but then you get a free 1st session once your induction is complete. Please choose the appropriate level (experienced/comfortable or New user) to book in with the correct instructor and to allow enough time for your induction. The gym membership means we can make sure we have up to date health information for you (in the form of a brief document called a PAR-Q which needs to be completed annually). You don’t need a membership to attend our classes.
“How can I Help?”
There are lots of ways to support what we do here at Penistone Leisure Centre. If you’re interested in volunteering your time or expertise, you can find out more on the Get involved page of our website, or by contacting Sarah. We are always on the look out for new volunteers and have roles to suit everyone! Reception, maintenance, being a trustee, the Leisure Centre relies on a broad variety of skills from our community and we wouldn’t be here without YOU!
“What classes do you have?”
You can find out more about what classes we have and their times, prices and the coaches by clicking on the ‘classes’ page.
“I’m a Coach and I’m interested in running my class at Penistone Leisure Centre, how much is it, and who do I contact?“
We have a run down of the facilities that are available to hire, along with prices etc on our ‘facilities room hire’ page. If you need any help, further information or to query availability please contact Sarah.
“I’m interested in having a party at Penistone Leisure Centre, how do I find out more information and who should I contact to book?”
There’s lots of information on our ‘Parties‘ page! You can find out more about what we can provide, what you need to bring, prices etc. Nikki handles all of our party bookings and can confirm availability and answer questions etc. We now do catering for parties on a Saturday – Self-cater option on Sundays.
“When is the Cafe open?”
The Hub Community Cafe is currently open
Tuesday 10-3pm
Friday 10-3pm
Saturday 9-1pm
“Is Penistone Leisure Centre Accessible?”
As part of our recent refurbishments, we have made big changes to the layout of the centre in order to make it accessible to everyone. We have installed a ‘Changing Places’ with a shower, toilet, adult sized changing table and hoist. We also have wide corridors, with high contrast door frames, lower serving counters and ramped access to all entrances/exits.
“Will I be welcome here?”
We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and friendly venue! Everyone is welcome at Penistone Leisure Centre.
Hi, is filming in the gym allowed as I am currently doing a PT course and I need to film myself training a client and thought of doing it here.
Hello, I have developed Osteoporosis – 2 of my vertebrae are ‘crumbling’.
Having read up on the subject, I’m advised to do aerobic exercise.
I used to do this years ago, but haven’t for quite a while.
Which of your classes would you suggest is the nearest thing to aerobics, please?
I need to start slowly, to build upper body strength.
Kind regards,
Hilary
Hello Hilary,
Depending on the sort of music and atmosphere you like, there is Clubbercise in the main hall with a big group, in the dark with glow sticks, disco lights and loud music. Or there is DDMix, where you learn different dances from around the world and different eras in a smaller group. Either can be taken at your own pace, but in the smaller group, it will be easier to get advice on adapting the moves for lower impact.
Rachel
Does your gym have a cable machine or are you looking in to adding one?
Morning Ollie,
Are you selling one? Please email me at fran@penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk with more details and I can take the info to the trustees for a decision.
Thanks,
Fran
I think its a waste of the time of the people involved that gym users need to –
1) have an induction
2) have an induction every year. I think this also insults existing gym users intelligence.
These things are off putting to new gym users.
Hi, I’m sorry you feel that inductions are a waste of time and off-putting to new starters. The induction and first session are totally free of charge, and a great way to get to know your way around our Gym and meet some of the volunteers/instructors.
1) Inductions actually an essential part of our Gym and without them, our insurance would be invalid. We are required to make sure that everyone is safe and healthy whilst within our building. Feedback from most new starters is that inductions are really helpful. They are free of charge along with your first gym session. They are friendly/informal.
2) You actually do not need to do an induction annually. You just have to complete a new PAR-Q form annually. Filling in the form takes around 3 minutes, and just keeps us up-to-date with any changes to your health. Health can change a great deal in a year, and we hope that the questions in the PAR-Q would flag up any important issues.
I hope this helps you to understand why we operate how we do, and clears up the misunderstanding about annual inductions.
Best wishes,
Fran
Hi
Do you have any volunteering opportunities for students with special needs?
Hi Joe,
We would certainly try to include anyone who wanted to volunteer and put support in place to help them if we had the capacity. It does depend on the individual though, you would need to talk to Louise at louise@penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk or on 07526 253100 about what the volunteer’s needs were and the sort of volunteering they would like to do. She will be finishing soon for today, back in Monday/Tuesday.
Hi my niece is 4 in January and I was looking at buying her some skating lessons for Christmas.
Could you tell me how much you would charge for a block of 6 lessons and if you supply the skates and safety gear.
Thanks
Hi Anne,
That’s a nice idea for Christmas, it’s more interesting to do something instead of have something. Sadly though, your niece isn’t old enough yet to come to skating lessons – we only take children from age 5 upwards. It’s not that they can’t skate when they are younger, more that they struggle to follow the instructions and aren’t quite mature enough for the structure of the lessons.
We can do you a voucher for some public skating sessions where she could come and have a go herself – skates, pads and helmets are all included in the price of £2.50/session. There are beginner mats out to slow them down and give a softer landing and often someone on hand who can give a few tips.
Let us know if you want a voucher,
Thanks,
Rachel
Thankyou for your quick response. Will she need a skating adult with her or could the adult just be there to supervise her?
How much would it be for the adult either way
Thanks
Anne
The adult can just be there to supervise and walk round with her if necessary. If the adult isn’t skating they are free and if they do want to skate they are also £2.50. There is also tea / coffee and snacks available.
Thanks,
Rachel
Hello,
What is the difference between penistone leisure centre and the sports centre at the penistone grammar school.
Are they they same business?
Hi Fred,
No they are completely different, on different sites and no connection between them. We are a community run leisure centre, we reopened the building 6 years ago after the council closed it. We have a gym, run classes, do roller skating, parties, hall hire for badminton, table tennis etc. Come and see us!
Rachel
How much is room hire for a birthday party please?
Hi. It is £75 for 2 hours party and half hour either side of your party to set up and pack away. Please contact Kirsty on 07341 300259 to book a party. Thank you.
Hi Warren all the details about parties are on our party page:
Hi..can I hire batminton tomorow at 10am please. Siri
Hi sorry the hall is not free at 10am tomorrow. If you want to use it at 12:15pm, please call me in the morning on 07947991727

Hi, I’m interested in having a skating party for my daughter. It’s really short notice and would be for next Thursday evening, 8th February? Could you please let me know if you have availability? Thank you
Joanna Stephens
Hi. Unfortunately we wouldn’t be able to offer the Thursday evening as a party slot, we have classes on in the hall during the week. We only have parties available over the weekends, but the weekend before and weekend are both fully booked. If you would like me to check any other dates please contact me on 07341 300259. Thanks Kirsty
Hi just wondering if you have any ping pong tables
Hi Jack, yes we do, £2.50 per person per hour. You need to contact Louise on 07526 253100 to book.
Thanks,
Rachel
Hi,
Do you still hold the adult skating session on a Saturday night please?
Thanks
Hi Joanne,
We do hold Adult Skating Sessions on Saturday nights – but it’s not every week. See here for dates: https://www.penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk/ne
The next one is 9th September.
Hope to see you there!
Rachel
Hi, My names is Rachel.
My doctors suggested you.
I am in need of a class where you can sit down & excersise. All to music??? Do you provide this class???
if not do you know of anywhere.
Many thanks Rachel
Hi Rachel,
Sorry it’s taken a while to get back to you, we don’t run Chair Exercise classes any more but I knew they were still available so I was trying to find out where. They are on Wednesdays 10:30-11:30 and Fridays 10:45-11:45 at Penistone Community Centre, next to the church.
Rachel
Really sorry Rachel, I found out this information for you but I don’t think I replied. We don’t run chair aerobics classes, but they do run at St John’s Community Centre in Penistone, Wednesdays 10:30-11:30am and Fridays 10:45-11:45am
Rachel
Hi I’m hoping to join the gym with week, do I need to book into an induction or just turn up for one
Hi Nathan,
You can just turn up for an induction, no need to book. Induction times are on our gym page.
Where do I park?
Hi Esther,
There is parking around the back and sides of Penistone Leisure Centre. Please follow the one way signs.
Thanks,
Rachel
Good Evening
I am looking at potential venues around the Penistone area to run my Cricket Coaching Academy.
I have noticed that you hire the hall out at £25 per hour for cricket and was wondering if this was including cricket nets / wickets as well (if you have nets at the centre)
Also could you email me the halls availability on an evening between 5.30pm and 7.30pm as well as availability on a Saturday and Sunday before 12pm
Thank you in advance
Matt Kellett

Hi Matt,
I am sending your question on to Amanda as she sorts out room hire. We do have cricket nets but not very much evening availability. The hall is currently free 10am-12 on Sundays.
Rachel
Hello,
I am wanting to start an evening class. What classes are on in the evening and how much are they?
Thanks
You can find all our classes on our Classes page.
Hope to see you soon.
Hi. I am wanting to start the gym but am just wanting to join just for something to do and abit of excersise. I can’t make any of the inductions so can I just join and come in?
Thanks
Hi Lily,
You can have an induction at most of the times the gym is open. If you text us on 07526 253100 or email info@penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk, we can try to arrange a time for your induction with you. I’m afraid you can’t use the gym without an induction.
